I have added this to my shopify site, and I can visit the community page through the app on the admin, but I can't see how to send customers there or get them to register as a user.

A great question.
Here's the Shopify Support video for adding a new link to your Menu.
The menu items usually appear on the Header & Footer of any page on your site.
So, for Example, the link text should be: "Community" & it should link to: '/community/connect'.
